The Maelor South Community Council is made up of a small number of people who care about our local community. Giving up their free time, they work hard to make our communities the best they can be.

I was born in Bettisfield and have worked in the area for most of my life. My community gave me a safe environment to grow up in and I wish to give something back by helping it face the challenges that inevitably lay ahead.

Penley Ward

John has lived in Penley for forty years. He is a governor at the Madras VA School, a member of the Penley Youth Club committee and trustee of the Dame Dorothy Trust. He enjoys spending time with his family and travelling

Penley is a place I call home. I look forward to working with the community council and my fellow residents in ensuring Penley continues to receive the facilities for all age groups and continues to be safe rural place to live.

I have lived, worked and supported my community for many years. As Penley continues to grow it faces both challenges and opportunities. As part of the community council, I will endeavour to ensure that Penley offers a safe family environment for people to call home.

I have lived in Penley for 8 years and enjoy the village and the surrounding area. As our village continues to grow it is important that we provide facilities for all ages and families.

I have a strong passion for working and supporting the community. I have a plethora of experience of working within the community and want to make positive contribution. I look forward to working alongside others on key local matters and as a resident being proud of the community where I live.

John Blanchard

Bettisfield Ward

I trained to be a Marine Engineer and then joined Ellerman Lines to sail on their turbine passenger/cargo vessels. On leaving the Merchant Navy, I had various engineering jobs, finally ending up as Production Manager of a flexible foam plant in Manchester. I retired to Bettisfield in 1992 and my wife and I are members of the Methodist Chapel.

I want to support my community by being involved in resolving the issues and work with the team on the community council to ensure Bettisfield and the Maelor South has a strong voice.

John Gallanders

Clerk

John is local having lived in the Wrexham area most of his life and has links to the Penley area having had three boys educated at the Maelor School

Previously John was the Chief Officer at AVOW-Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham and brings considerable knowledge about the workings of the Councils, Health and Community Groups to the role of Clerk to the Community Council. John acts as a representative of the Voluntary Sector in Wrexham at a local, regional and national partnership involving a broad range of Public Services

As a Trustee of a number of charities John has first hand knowledge and challenges that local communities face in seeking support and funding.


Statement of Payments

INDEPENDENT REMUNERATION PANEL FOR WALES – ANNUAL RETURN It is a statutory requirement for all Councils to submit and publish the annual return to the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales by no later than 30 September 2025. All members of the Maelor South Community Council serve the council on a voluntary basis and claim no expenses for the work we carry out for our community. Details of our return can be see below.
